Hold the Door Zombie Defense Tower & Unit Tier List by Role
Economy, splash clear, boss single-target, support slow, and door tankiness — ranked for co-op on Lava Pit, Mine, and Subway.
This page ranks unit and upgrade archetypes for Hold the Door: Zombie Defense, not recycled turret names from other Roblox tower defense games. Zomvex’s experience is co-op first: up to 25 players share one door, one skip-vote rhythm, and maps (Lava Pit, Mine, Subway) that punish lopsided loadouts. A unit that looks weak in solo testing can be S-tier in squad context if it enables splash lanes or stabilizes Rusty Queen fights on Mine.
Tiers below use S / A / B / C bands by role. Within each band, pick the specific unlock your account has that best fills the job — range on Subway splits, AoE on Lava Pit merges, burst on Mine boss windows.
Ranking criteria
We score roles on four axes that decide real lobbies:
- Wave tempo — Does the role pay for itself before the first difficulty spike (usually mid early-game)?
- Map coverage — Can one placement cover a choke without leaving a side lane open on Subway?
- Boss contribution — Does it add meaningful pressure during Rusty Queen without stealing economy slots?
- Co-op synergy — Does it multiply teammates’ DPS (slows, grouping) or only pad your personal stats?
Door upgrades are ranked separately because they are team-wide insurance, not a sixth DPS slot.
Economy / early income archetype
Job: Fund slot unlocks, first-tier upgrades, and emergency repairs before wave income stalls.
| Tier | Role performance | When to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| S | Consistent income that scales with wave count without needing perfect placement | First 8 waves on any map; mandatory if your lobby skips early upgrades |
| A | Strong income but map-dependent (needs a safe rear slot) | Lava Pit when splash players cover your setup time |
| B | Delayed payoff — better mid-run than wave 1 | Switch only if squad already has two economy players |
| C | Luxury picks that delay door safety | Avoid in public lobbies unless coordinated |
Practical rule: One dedicated economy player beats three players who each buy flashy DPS and stall at base slot caps. Pair with Beginner Builds for spending order.
Splash / lane clear archetype
Job: Reduce zombie density before stacks reach the door; cover merged paths on Lava Pit and main choke on Subway.
| Tier | Role performance | When to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| S | Reliable AoE uptime on the primary merge; handles mixed runner + grunt waves | Always — at least one splash role per squad |
| A | Strong clear but narrow arc; needs rotation on split maps | Subway when a second splash covers the side lane |
| B | Situational clear (long wind-up, short range) | Mine corridors if support slows hold zombies in the blast zone |
| C | Single-lane only; fails when paths split | Do not solo-carry splash duty on Subway |
Splash units are not boss killers. Keep them mid-path so they farm density for the whole team, not just your stats.
Single-target boss DPS archetype
Job: Burn elite HP bars — especially Rusty Queen on Mine — during telegraphed windows.
| Tier | Role performance | When to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| S | Sustained burst on one target without starving economy | Mine boss waves; late Subway when elites replace grunt filler |
| A | High peak damage but downtime between shots | Works if support slows extend the firing window |
| B | Strong on grunts, weak on boss HP pools | Replace before dedicated Mine pushes |
| C | Spread damage that looks good on paper but loses boss races | Never stack more than one unless splash is covered |
Assign one boss DPS owner in co-op. Two half-invested boss roles lose to one fully upgraded single-target slot plus door repairs.
Support / slow archetype
Job: Create kill zones by reducing move speed or clumping runners; extend splash and boss uptime.
| Tier | Role performance | When to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| S | Boss-effective slow or clump at the front of the path | Subway side spawns; Mine when Rusty Queen kites |
| A | Strong slow but low personal damage | Pair behind splash on Lava Pit open lanes |
| B | Short duration or small radius — needs duplicate coverage | Public lobbies only if no one else slows |
| C | Pure debuff with no wave 1 value | Skip until economy and splash are online |
Support looks “low tier” in DPS screenshots. In coordinated lobbies it is A-tier minimum because it turns B-tier splash into S-tier clear.
Door tankiness / repair priority
Job: Keep the shared door alive when leaks happen; buy time for repairs during boss enrage.
| Tier | Upgrade timing | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| S | First reinforcement before wave 10 on public lobbies | Cheaper than wiping and restarting |
| A | Second tier before Rusty Queen on Mine | Sync with skip votes — do not repair during DPS windows |
| B | Cosmetic or minor HP bumps that delay core splash | Only if door captain role is assigned |
| C | Max door while units are still base tier | Loses runs on Subway when side lanes leak |
Door upgrades are team resources. Call repairs in voice or chat; one player spamming skip while the door cracks ends more runs than “wrong” unit tiers.
Combined role priority by wave band
Use this quick reference when slot-limited:
Waves 1–8: Economy (S) → Splash (S) → Door tier 1 (S) → Support (A) → Boss DPS (B)
Waves 9–18: Splash upgrade (S) → Boss DPS online (S) → Support (S) → Economy maintenance (A) → Door tier 2 (A)
Waves 19+ / hard maps: Boss DPS max (S) → Support for elites (S) → Splash coverage on splits (S) → Door tier 3+ (A) → Economy (B unless snowballing)
Map-specific tier shifts
Lava Pit — Splash and economy stay S longer; open lanes expose greedy boss DPS.
Mine — Boss single-target and door tankiness jump one band during Rusty Queen; economy can drop to A if squad shares kills.
Subway — Support slow and dual splash coverage outrank raw boss DPS until elites replace grunt waves.
What we deliberately exclude
- Name dumps from unrelated zombie defense games (glue, plasma, hydrogen, etc.) unless Zomvex confirms identical units
- Solo-only rankings that ignore co-op door mechanics
- Pay-to-win guesses — we rank gameplay roles, not unverified Robux items
When patches change costs or paths, cross-check Updates and adjust one role at a time.
Build pages that apply these tiers
Theory becomes wins on these loadout pages:
- Beginner Builds — early/mid spending with one embedded gameplay video
- Late Game Comps — boss-ready squads for Mine and deep Subway
- Loadout Checklist — pre-match verification so roles are actually filled
For first-hour mechanics, read Getting Started before hard-committing currency to a band you cannot afford to upgrade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers players ask before every session.
Why rank roles instead of individual tower names?
Hold the Door’s unlock list evolves with patches, and copying names from other games misleads players. Roles describe what you need on Lava Pit, Mine, and Subway regardless of the current unit roster.
What is S-tier for Rusty Queen on Mine?
Single-target boss DPS at S tier when fully upgraded, plus A-tier or higher support slow to hold the boss in range. Splash stays mandatory for add waves between boss phases.
Is economy still S-tier after wave 15?
Economy drops toward A or B once the squad snowballs, unless wipes force rebuilds. Splash and boss DPS take over as primary upgrade spend.
How many splash roles does a squad need?
At least one S-tier splash job on the main merge. Subway often needs a second A-tier splash on the side lane. Lava Pit can sometimes run one strong splash if support clumps runners.
When should I upgrade the door versus units?
First door reinforcement is S-tier priority before wave 10 in public lobbies. Further door tiers trail splash and boss DPS unless leaks are already happening.
Where do I see these tiers in action?
Beginner Builds walks early loadouts step by step; Late Game Comps shows boss-ready squads. Use both after picking roles from this page.
